FAQ

  • Do you tumble or otherwise manufacture your sea glass?
Never and nope! All of the sea glass in my work is hand-gathered by myself on Humboldt County beaches. Authenticity is important to me, especially as Laughing Lilith is committing to reducing waste whenever and wherever possible. Sea glass, as gorgeous as it is, is technically pollution, and my removal of it from the environment is integral to the context of my work. I will never offer tumbled or manufactured sea glass.
  • Why is your sea glass work so expensive?
All of the sea glass I use is hand-gathered by myself at local Humboldt County beaches, often as part of general trash cleanup projects. It takes hours of dedication (and not a small amount of back, neck, and shoulder strain) to build up the collection that I have, and I need to compensate myself for that time spent. And that's just to acquire the main material! From there I sort and match each piece of glass, design the earrings, purchase the metals for the earrings, and craft them, which can take additional hours. If you're curious about my process I encourage you to see my blog post here.
  • Do you get your sea glass from Glass Beach in Fort Bragg?
No, all of the sea glass I find is from Humboldt County. Place-based art is central to my crafting ethos; each piece of sea glass I use in my work represents a fragment of local history, as sea glass can take decades to form. Please see my blog entries here and here for further context.
  • I have allergies to certain metals; what are my options if I'm interested in a piece?
This is a common concern, and I am working to make every effort on accommodating this need. Currently my main focus is on providing hypoallergenic findings for the parts of the piece that will directly touch your skin. Upon request I can swap out ear wires, hoops, or leverbacks for niobium, titanium, gold- and silver-fill, or surgical steel materials, but, as each of these have a higher cost to me, it could cost a few extra dollars. This is my interim solution until my business and skillsets grow. If you would like to suggest an alternative approach please feel free to contact!
  • What if my piece needs repairs?
If your piece(s) arrive damaged or defective you are eligible for repairs, replacements, or refunds as long as Laughing Lilith is notified within 15 days of delivery of your item(s). If, in the lifespan of your piece, you find you'd like repairs made please reach out to Laughing Lilith via this website's contact form. We can discuss the specifics of your desired repair from there.
  • My piece lost a shell/bone/sea glass, can I get a replacement?
If your piece loses a shell, bone, or fragment of sea glass it is possible to have another piece sent to you. In this scenario we would work together to select a fitting replacement. The replacement shell, bone, or sea glass will need to be paid for, along with whatever shipping may be required. The replacement fee is waived if Laughing Lilith is notified of the lost shell, bone, or sea glass within 15 days of your receipt of the piece, as that is considered a defective or damaged product and is covered under the return policy.
  • You say Laughing Lilith has an "environmental ethos." What is that?
    I've been fortunate enough to x y z.
  • How do you handle packaging waste reduction?
Currently the shipping process is what generates the most single-use waste. Laughing Lilith is fortunate to have community partners who are funneling some of their unwanted packaging waste to my studio. This can include corrugated cardboard, plastic bubble wrap, and tissue paper. This is an okay interim solution, but the goal of course would be to move away from plastic entirely, as this process only extends the usefulness of the bubble wrap by one additional shipment. If you have other suggestions I'd love to hear them, and for more information on what the studio is doing to reduce personal production waste please see this blog post!
