Melding Conservation and Art in Humboldt County

My name is Kylie! I graduated from University of Oregon with my Master of Science in Environmental Studies mid-pandemic in 2020. Since then I've returned to Humboldt County (Wiyot Territory) with the goal of making place-based artwork informed by my research interests, my deep-seated love for this area, and my wish to participate in intersectional environmentalism in whatever way I can.

Vision and Artist's Statement

The absolute dream is to make art consistent with my values and curiosities; I want to explore relationships between place, power, gender, and land ethics.

Perfection in any of these pursuits is paralyzing, and the goal is to get as close as I can. I hope as my business grows I can partner with local organizations to use my pieces for fundraising and outreach efforts, and to help power the important work that community resources already have in progress.

Who is Lilith?

Lilith is a figure from ancient mythology who has been and continues to be reclaimed by feminist scholars and creators in recent years.

The version I invoke says that she was the first wife of Adam, born of the same clay as him and, in her eyes, therefore his equal. He disagreed, and after refusing to be subservient to him Lilith fled Eden for the shores of the Red Sea. Angels were sent after her to drag her back, and when she argued they tried to drown her. She survived, and so they next threatened to murder every child she gave birth to. She instead gave birth to thousands and thousands of sea monsters each day to spite them.

My Lilith is tired and angry and somewhat feral, and she deserves a break. I wanted to envision her wild and laughing and rejoicing in nature outside the confines of a manicured garden.
